Apprentice Graduation Celebration

From Apprentice to Graduate QS!

18th July 2021

There are celebrations aplenty at Northen Surveying Services (NSS) for team member Connor Davies, who has successfully completed his degree as part of his apprenticeship.

It has been a fantastic five-year journey for the former Brimsham Green School student, who was taken on as an apprentice by the family-run business in May 2016.

He had worked as floor fitter and tiler, where he gained an interest in the construction industry, before learning about the apprenticeship role via a friend.

After submitting a CV, he had a two-month trial, before starting the apprenticeship and beginning a two-year level three diploma with the University College of Estate Management (UCEM), which is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), CIOB, CABE and ICES.

NSS supported Connor through his studies and gave him a variety of opportunities to learn outside the course by working on different construction schemes. A highlight was working on the Parlour Pool project in Chipping Sodbury, where a disused Milking Parlour was converted into a swimming pool. “That was the best experience and gave me a good taste of a full quantity surveyor role,” he said.

Now the sky is the limit for Connor who has just graduated with a 2:1 BSc (Hons) degree in Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management from the University of the West of England Bristol.

Connor said: “Starting the apprenticeship with Northen is the best thing I have ever done because it gave me a purpose and a direction and gave me something to work towards. I cannot say enough about the support from Northen, they took me on when I was 20 and provided everything I needed and gave me time to study and work.”

The next step is gaining professional experience in the business and working towards Chartered Membership of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (MRICS).

Connor added: “It is such a nice feeling to know I now have a career rather than just a job. I don’t think this is the end of my educational journey and I would say to any new apprentice, it is hard work but so beneficial.”
